Stars Lead, Kings Rise on Stanley Cup Odds

You would expect having the best record in the Western Conference and three of the top five scorers in the entire NHL would make you a strong Stanley Cup contender. The oddsmakers at online sportsbook Bodog believe so at least and have made the Dallas Stars their new Stanley Cup favorite.

At Bodog the Stars are +750 chalk to hoist the Stanley Cup at season’s end. With a 14-4 record and 28 points, Dallas is the top team in the West and they boast arguably the most dangerous tandem in the league in Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn. As well, Stars John Klingberg currently leads all defensemen in scoring with 20 points.

With the Stars taking over top spot on the Cup futures odds that drops the Montreal Canadiens down to second at +800. They also share those odds with the New York Rangers. After smooth sailing following the injury to Carey Price the Habs have hit a bit of a rough patch lately. In back-to-back losses backup goalie Mike Condon was lit up for seven goals, including four on 11 shots against Colorado.

The hottest team in the NHL right now are the Rangers. New York has won nine straight games while outscoring their opponents 33-13. Rangers winger Mats Zuccarello could be on his way to a career-best season after starting out with 18 points in 18 games, including a team-leading nine goals.

After Montreal the rest of the Canadian teams aren’t expected to make much noise in the playoffs according to Bodog. Winnipeg, Ottawa and Vancouver are all listed at +4000 on the Stanley Cup odds list. The Jets have dropped from +3300 after losing their last five games. The odds for the rest of the Canadian clubs include Calgary at +5000, Edmonton at +7500, and Toronto at +10000.

One team bettors may want to keep a close eye on right now are the Los Angeles Kings. The Kings currently sit at +1200, but they may be headed for a quick rise if their recent success continues. Los Angeles sits in first in the Pacific division after going 7-3 in their last 10 games.
