Winter Classic Betting: Bruins Host Habs

It’s an Original Six matchup in this year’s NHL Winter Classic, as the Montreal Canadiens and the Boston Bruins get set to face off at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro on New Year’s Day.

Montreal should be glad to put the month of December behind them. On Monday night the Canadiens defeated Tampa Bay 4-3 in a shootout to snap a six-game losing streak. That victory was only Montreal’s third win of the month in 13 games.

Montreal may be missing Hart Trophy netminder Carey Price, but their biggest problem has been putting the puck in the net. During their six-game losing streak Montreal scored only six goals. Montreal forward Brendan Gallagher, who has been out with broken fingers, may be ready to return for the Classic and would provide a nice boost to the struggling offense.

The Bruins are also slumping lately, heading into their Tuesday night matchup with Ottawa on a three-game losing streak. The Bruins scored six goals in those three games, buy Lasix but they surrendered 11. The Bruins are also dealing with a key injury to forward David Krejci.

The Habs and Bruins have clashed three times this season with Montreal taking two of three. The Bruins came out on top 3-1 at home the last time they met on December 9. That win snapped an eight-game losing streak for Boston versus Montreal.

This will be the second outdoor game for the Bruins. They previously played in the 2010 Winter Classic and edged Philadelphia 2-1 in overtime. The Canadiens have played in two outdoor games including the 2003 Heritage Classic against Edmonton and the 2011 Heritage Classic versus Calgary. Montreal beat the Oilers 4-3 and lost to the Flames 4-0.

Since the outdoor game craze got started in 2003 the NHL has set up shop in outdoor arenas 15 times. Neither team is playing on their home ice obviously, but the host team of the gimmick game has actually performed pretty poorly over the years. In the 15 outdoor games the host team has only four wins.

In last year’s Winter Classic Washington defeated Chicago 3-2 at Nationals Park. The oddsmakers listed the Capitals at -150 in that one and you can probably expect similar odds for the Bruins on New Year’s Day.
