Calgary Flames - Season Preview
Last year was a mediocre year at best for Calgary, as the Flames fell one win shy of a .500 season and did not qualify for the NHL Playoffs. Instead, the Calgary Flames finished fourth in the Scotia North division behind Toronto, Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Montreal. Of the 31 teams in total who participate in the NHL, the Flames finished 20th overall in league standings with 26 wins and 27 losses.
This year, the Flames are in the Pacific Division with seven other teams, and will rely upon their top forwards to produce. Despite the departure of defenseman Mark Giordano (selected by the Seattle Kraken in the 2021 NHL Expansion Draft), having coach Darryl Sutter in place for a full training camp and the start of the season, can only help Calgary and could be the x-factor in whether the Flames make the 2022 NHL playoffs.

NHL Betting GuidesCalgary Flames Team History
The Flames are the third major professional ice hockey team to represent the city of Calgary. From 1921-1927, there was the Calgary Tigers, and from 1975-1977 there was the Calgary Cowboys. The Calgary Flames are one of two NHL franchises in Alberta – the other club being the Edmonton Oilers. Over the years, these two teams have developed quite the rivalry known as the “Battle of Alberta”.
Founded in 1972 as the Atlanta Flames, the hockey club relocated to Calgary in 1980 and played their first three seasons at the Stampede Corral. In 1983, they moved into their current home arena, the Scotiabank Saddledome, originally known as the Olympic Saddledome.
The Calgary Flames have won two Presidents’ Trophies (1987-88 and 1988-89) as the NHL’s best regular-season team, and have also won seven division championships.
Calgary Flames Playoff History
In 1985-86, the Flames became the first Calgary team to compete for the Stanley Cup since the Calgary Tigers in 1923-24. They won their first and only championship in 1988-89 against the Habs in six games. That marked the only time an opponent had beat the Canadiens to win the Stanley Cup on Montreal Forum ice.
The Flames didn’t win another playoff series until 2004, one of the longest droughts in NHL history. Their unexpected run to the Stanley Cup Finals in ‘04 gave rise to the “Red Mile”. The city of Calgary basically became one big party, which saw as many as 35,000 fans pack the streets in a “C of Red” during the first few rounds of the playoffs, and over 60,000 fans for the finals.
In 2005-06, the Flames captured their first division title in 12 years, but lost to the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in seven games in the first round of the playoffs. In 2006-07, the Flames fell in six games to the top-seeded Detroit Red Wings in the first round. In 2007-08, Calgary lost in seven games to the Pacific Division champion San Jose Sharks in the Western Conference quarter-finals. In 2008-09, the Flames failed to advance past the first round of the playoffs yet again, after they were eliminated in six games by the Chicago Blackhawks.
From 2009 to 2013, the team failed to qualify for the playoffs. In 2014-15 they clinched a playoff berth and eliminated the Vancouver Canucks in the first round of the playoffs in six games for their first playoff series win since 2004. The Flames were then eliminated in the second round by the Anaheim Ducks in five games.
The Flames failed to qualify for the playoffs again in 2015-16, but bounced back to make the playoffs in 2016-17 as the conference’s first wild card seed. They were swept in the first round by the Anaheim Ducks. The Flames once again failed to qualify for the playoffs in 2017-18, and lost to the Colorado Avalanche in five games in the first round during the 2018-19 playoffs.
The 2019-20 schedule was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic, but the Flames qualified for the playoffs based on their regular-season points percentage. They knocked off the Jets in four games in the qualifying round, but lost the next series in six games to the Dallas Stars.
NHL North Division
The Calgary Flames competed in the realigned North Division last season with six other NHL teams – the Edmonton Oilers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Ottawa Senators, Winnipeg Jets, Vancouver Canucks, and the Montreal Canadiens.

A lot like baseball’s runline, the puckline in NHL betting is hockey’s version of a point spread. And because NHL games are usually a lower scoring affair, this type of bet only uses a spread of 1.5 goals. NHL teams typically average a little under three goals per game, with the most common score being 3-2.
Single-event sports betting is the act of staking money on one selection or a single market. It offers bettors the opportunity to make a profit by predicting the outcome of one match. Single-event sports betting is prohibited in Canada. Bill C-218 and Bill C-13 were introduced in 2020 to legalize single-event sports betting in Canada. Both bills were set aside during the COVID-19 pandemic, but discussions and votes picked back up during early 2021.
